The TAG Heuer Carrera: A Classic Reimagined

Born from a love of car racing, the new TAG Heuer Carrera watches pack plenty of style punch.

First introduced in 1963, the Carrera watch was designed by Jack Heuer, the fourth generation of the brand’s founding family. TAG Heuer, which was known as Ed. Heuer & Co. S.A. at the time, had stopped crafting traditional wristwatches in 1958 in favor of focusing on timing instruments, including stop watches and chronographs, as well as dashboard timing instruments for race and rally cars.

The Carrera has transformed over time, and its first re-edition was unveiled in 1996. This year new Day-Date models were introduced at the 2025 Watches & Wonders show in Geneva. The new watches are “reimagined for a new era, blending timeless heritage, victory on the wrist, and the fortune of a success watch,” according to the brand.

Race to the Finish

Jack Heuer was passionate about car racing and set out to craft a watch that could withstand the rigors of car races both on and off the track. The Carrera watch, a chronograph, was crafted to ensure its timekeeping accuracy in challenging conditions while retaining a design sense of elegance and proportion.

Rallying Cry

The Carrera is named for the legendary Carrera Panamericana, a border-to-border rally race that took place in Mexico for five consecutive years, from 1950 to 1954. The endurance race traversed the country and was considered one of the most dangerous road races in the world. Organized by the Mexican government, the Carrera Panamericana celebrated the completion of the Mexican section of the Pan-American Highway. Drivers from all over the world traveled to Mexico to compete in the five-day competition.

All Geared Up

The new Day-Dates feature in-house automatic-winding movements with a power reserve of 80 hours and are offered in six variations, including dual time GMT timepieces. The TAG Heuer Carrera Date Twin-Time features a teal blue sunray-finished dial, a color that was inspired by historical racing livery. The dual time GMT hand is red tipped, adding to its legibility, and its design echoes the shape of a heritage Carrera GMT watch. The new Day-Date models include dial colors of black, blue, and smoky red, with variations on leather straps, as well as steel bracelets and two-tone steel and 18K rose gold bracelets.
